ANNOUNCING THE 2012 SEET TECHNOLOGY WORKSHOP IN GOLDEN, COLORADO
The Advanced Technology Environmental and Energy Center (ATEEC, at www.ateec.org) announces that applications are now open for the 2012 SEET Workshop, June 10–22, 2012 at the Center for Energy Research Institute at the Colorado School of Mines in Golden, CO.
The annual SEET Workshops are funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation (DUE#0902309) and currently developed through a partnership among ATEEC, Colorado School of Mines, Eastern Iowa Community College District, and the Partnership for Environmental Technology Education. Current high school and two-year college energy technology instructors from across the U.S. are invited to apply. Twenty-five (25) instructors will be selected to attend and will receive a stipend to assist with completion of workshop activities. Most expenses are covered for participants by the grant. Additional details and the workshop application are available on the ATEEC Web site at www.ateec.org/sustainable-energy-education-training-seet.
The primary goal of the SEET Technology Workshop project is to build the capacity of energy technicians to meet the challenges of sustainable energy in the 21st century workplace through ten-day intensive annual workshops at research facilities. Eligible workshop participants are energy technology instructors at upper level high school and community college levels. Workshop content experts will share knowledge about research advances in energy technology, requirements for technicians, and implications for a sustainable energy future. Instructors who participate in the workshops will be connected and supported by an active online network and workshop follow-up support. Sustainable energy knowledge will be further extended to additional technology instructors through events coordinated by workshop participants in their home communities.
The 2012 workshop will focus on energy efficiency and renewable energy technologies. The workshop will provide hands-on, inquiry-based lab experiences; take-home equipment and training; and site visits and field work assisted by partners of the hosting institutions. The workshop participants will team to identify and develop teaching and learning strategies and materials to share with high school and two-year college educators through ATEEC’s energy resource clearinghouse.
Send your application and two letters of recommendation by March 1, 2012 as directed on the application. (Please note that late or incomplete applications may not receive full consideration.) Questions not answered on the ATEEC Web site may be directed to ATEEC at mdocherty@eicc.edu.

Scholarships from National Center for Women in Information Technology
Below is an excerpt from the w3w3 website about scholarships available in the IT industry for young women. As with most industries there are many occupations that are considered green, including those in IT. Green data centers, for an example, are an excellent example of such a green job that transcends across both industries. Low energy/heat emitting servers servers are yet another IT related green product. The green job possibilities are endless...
"Talent Pipeline: Awards for Aspirations in Computing 1072_ 8/29/11 - Being the father of four daughters, Larry has a high interest in the National Center for Women in Information Technology. Ruthe Farmer, is the Director of Strategic Initiatives with NCWIT, which is a coalition of well over 250 organizations (corporations, K-12 organizations, universities) working together to increase women's participation in computing and IT. The program that Ruthe is talking about, NCWIT's 'talent pipeline program' called the Awards for Aspirations in Computing. "Which is an effort to find and recognize high school girls that are active in computing technology right now and have the greatest potential to go on and major in that field in college. Ruthe said they started the award program in 2007 with twelve girls. In 2008 they went national and today the national event serves 35 national winners and those come from the top one percent of all applicants. They get about 3000 applications from approximately 35 states, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico. In 2011 NCWIT recognized 355 girls, and in the 2011-12 round they expect to recognize between 500 to 700 girls. Ruthe's long term goal is to have a thousand girls per year recognized in approximately 70 affiliates that would cover all 50 U.S. states, and then a pool of 10,000 girls." Larry asked, "Who are these young women, how do we recognize them, what would we be looking for?" Ruthe said, "They could be your daughter, niece, granddaughter, your neighbor's kid, your babysitter - it could be any girl... What we're looking for is any girl with aspirations and interest in computing. We're not looking for the rock star, top of her class, valedictorian.. We are looking for that little bit of interest and how we can foster it from here." At the national level, the prize is $500 cash, a laptop and a trip for two [the girl and a parent] to the Bank of America 'Technology Stars of the Future Gala' which is comparable to the Oscars. The NCWIT Academic Alliance is committed to 100 schools offering scholarships by this next year. The opportunities really are there, this is a beginning point for these girls. A quick note to teachers. We want all of your girls, not just your top students. Often with the word competition, teachers think I'll send someone who has a shot at winning. Really everyone has a shot because we're looking for aspirations. So ask all of them to apply." Pass this interview along to others you know would be interested... "

SMA Solar plant to bring hundreds of jobs to Denver
Denver Business Journal - by Cathy Proctor
"SMA Solar Technology AG, the world’s largest manufacturer of a critical component in solar power generation, said Monday it will invest about $20 million in its first North American manufacturing plant — in Denver — expected to open in the first half of 2010.
SMA, based in Niestetal, Germany, manufacturers inverters for solar power systems — the device that converts direct current (DC) electricity, produced by the panels, into alternating current (AC) electricity, which can be used by electrical equipment and sent onto the power grid network. SMA holds about 40 percent of the world’s marketshare for solar panel inverters and manufactures equipment for small, residential-sized systems as well as commercial and large, utility-scale systems...
The company surveyed 10 cities in the United States and chose Denver for its first manufacturing plant outside of Germany — specifically about 180,000 square feet of space at 4701 Havana — due to the building’s access to Interstate 70 and nearby railway lines and the skills of the local workforce, officials said...About 300 jobs are expected initially, with the average wage of $30,000. The company expects that as demand for the inverters grows that the number of jobs could grow to 700 at the plant, Urbon said..." [link to full article]
